Jess is an Associate in the Disputes group at Simkins, having joined the firm as a Trainee in September 2013 and qualified in 2015. As part of the team at Simkins, Jess advises high profile and corporate clients in the media and entertainment industries on defamation, privacy, harassment and data protection issues and on copyright and contractual matters.
Since joining Simkins, Jess has been regularly involved in advising clients on urgent pre- and post‑publication issues with a view to limiting damage, seeking remedies and obtaining vindication for the firm’s clients whilst avoiding litigation where possible. Jess has been an integral part of the team in seeking early resolution of disputes as well as litigating when that is the best available option for the client. Clients appreciate her responsiveness, attention to detail, commitment and willingness to go above and beyond to ensure their requirements are met.
On the other side of her practice, Jess has built up significant experience of advising and litigating on copyright issues, performers’ rights, passing off, and contractual disputes for clients in the music, film, television and publishing industries. She has been an important part of the team taking cases to the High Court in London, the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court and the European Court of Justice.
Jess has a degree in History and French from the University of Leeds. Before completing the Graduate Diploma in Law and the Legal Practice Course at the University of Law in London, Jess worked in communications at Pitch Marketing where she worked with clients such as the National Basketball Association, Channel 4 and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games.
Jess was a crucial member of the team at Simkins that won “Case of the Year” at Spear’s Wealth Management Awards 2018 for the team’s representation of Sir Cliff Richard in his ground-breaking privacy case against the BBC and she is recommended in the Legal 500 for defamation and privacy matters.
