Renewed calls to tackle “revenge porn”
There are renewed calls for changes to the law to assist bringing those responsible for “revenge porn” to justice. The issue is again making front page news in the UK with Justice Secretary Chris Grayling, who regards the issue as a “growing problem”, confirming that the Government is “very open” to the idea of changing the law. His comments followed a question raised by Maria Miller, the former Culture Secretary.
There is no doubt that the issue causes intense embarrassment and even devastation. Women are usually the victims, but not exclusively so. Whilst there are a number of existing laws in England that can assist victims and bring perpetrators to justice, they may not easily apply to all revenge porn circumstances. It is widely believed that victims, the Police, and, the Crown Prosecution Service would benefit from new laws specifically drafted to deal with the modern phenomenon.
